JamieLee Cohen
“Life is for living, be present & passionate in every moment"

JamieLee is a South African born artist who grew up in the vibrant and diverse city of Johannesburg. She moved to Cape Town after studying fashion design in Johannesburg and decided to pursue a career in art.

Jamie-Lee studies under a number of different teachers, mainly in London and Cape Town, which have all influenced her style of creating. She decided to leap into her career as a professional artist after doing a number of commission pieces for clients who inspired her to take on art as a full time career and has since been exhibited at number of galleries and shows in Cape Town and London.

One of her greatest inspirations has been Henry Matisse because of his extraordinary use of colour. A quote that resonates deeply with her from Matisse “The essential thing is to spring forth, to express the bolt of lightning one senses upon contact with a thing. The function of the artist is not to translate an observation but to express the shock of the object on his nature; the shock, with the original reaction”
Henri Matisse

JamieLee states “I am deeply inspired by how colour can move a person and evoke feelings, When I look at a subject matter I interpret it in how I feel rather than just what I see- In my work I try to capture not only a the subject matter physically but also emotionally. In essence the connection between mind (what I see) body (The physical piece of work) and spirit (The emotional connotations connected to that work). Through my studies and travel I continue to discover and grow and am excited for all the mysteries that lie ahead.
